Minimum standards

The only minimum standards for color on University web sites are those related to accessibility. Please see the section on interface technology.

Core recommendations

The official colors of Georgetown University are blue and gray. These colors were selected at the close of the United States Civil War to represent the University's role in healing divisions between the North and South.

For web purposes, the University colors are a dark solid blue and a medium neutral gray:

Other hues and shades of similar blue may be considered appropriate for web page designs. However, these should be close to the original color (not too green or red) and different variations should not be used in combination:

Other shades of gray may also be considered appropriate, and several shades of gray can be used on a page. However, a neutral gray should always be used:

#333333 #666666 #999999 #cccccc

It is not suggested that blue and gray be used as the basis for all University web pages. If blue and gray are selected as the basis of a color scheme, it is usually appropriate to add a warmer color for contrast. The following contrast colors are suggested:

#ffcc33  #cc9933 #996600 #663300

#ff9900 #cc6633 #990000 #669900

To avoid the perception of clutter, only two or three main colors should be selected for the general layout of most web pages. This does not exclude the use of graphics or photographs containing many colors, if they are appropriate to the tone of the page.

Sample color combinations include the following:
