University graphics

Minimum standards

Two main graphic elements identify Georgetown University on the web: its official web nameplate and the University seal.

The nameplate and seal are copyright owned by Georgetown University and not every person or organization affiliated with the University is authorized to use them. If you are in doubt about your right to use these elements, please contact the Office of University Counsel.

The University nameplate consists of the words "Georgetown University," arranged as shown, in Caslon typeface and in the same color.

  1. The nameplate may be used in other color combinations, but only in the same typeface, arrangement, and with all of the text the same color.
  2. No text, such as the name of a department, may be added directly to the nameplate.
  3. When displayed the nameplate should not bump into or touch other graphics or text.

The University seal is derived from a pen-and-ink drawing that contains a high level of detail and is difficult to reproduce legibly on the web.

  1. The digital images of the seal provided in this style manual should be used rather than the lower quality digital images that were previously available or images scanned from print publications.
  2. The seal should not be reduced to less than 50 pixels in height and its aspect ratio (proportion of height to width) may not be changed.
  3. When used as a figure (standing by itself) the seal should be darker than its background and should not overlap with other elements. The seal should not bump into or touch other graphics or text.
  4. When used as a background or watermark, the seal may be lighter than its background and may overlap with other elements.
  5. The content of the official seal may not be altered in any way. Variations on the design of the seal are prohibited on the web and in print publications.

Core recommendations

The University seal and nameplate are suggested for use on department web sites. They need not be used on every page but even used sparingly they can help make a web site more recognizably part of the Georgetown University web.
