Main University web site
Minimum standards
Georgetown University's web identity is most clearly expressed in its main web site. These top tier web pages represent all University campuses and departments. In order to preserve the visual identity of the University's main web site:
- No web page, including any web page published by a department or individual at Georgetown University, may copy any page in the main University web site and use it as a template for a new web page. This includes all web pages beginning with http://www.georgetown.edu/home/. If you are in doubt as to whether a web page is part of the main University web site, please contact the chair or co-chairs of the GUide Committee.
- This style manual provides sections on the appropriate use of University graphics and navigation bars. Please use the resources in this style manual and do not copy any graphic or decorative element used in the main University web site.
- Images are available for department use in the image database. Please do not link to any of the image files used in the main University web site as these are subject to change.
Core recommendations
Many users reach the web sites of University departments by starting with the main University web site. They may also return to the main University web site to find other department sites in the same session, or navigate from one department site to another. To facilitate this process, it is recommended that:
- Department web sites should be different enough from the main University web site to allow a user to easily tell that he or she has reached the separate web site of a University department.
- Nevertheless, department web sites should contain some elements that allow a user to easily tell that he or she is still using a web site at Georgetown University and not a web site at some other institution.
- Likewise, department web sites should have enough in common with each other so that a user navigating from one to another can easily tell that he or she is still viewing a Georgetown University web site.
